From The Editor

Dear Reader,

A play on the idea of an incorporation - a brainchild, a business, a brand as well as my operation of ink (figuratively of course), as I am most passionate about writing, this blog serves to provide my opinion and insights on current events in the media.

"Writers always say, 'I always knew I wanted to be a writer; when I was a three-month-old foetus a pen formed in my hand and I began to scratch my first story on the inside of my mother's womb.' I started later, in my early twenties."
- Harlan Coben

That being said, my name is Naledi Sibisi, who in her early twenties, has grown comfortable with the idea that the pen is indeed her portion. For an unspecified period of time, I wish to take you on a journey as I welcome you to The Ink-Operation of N.

Interview: G.O.

The finer things in life are often associated with champagne glasses and French dishes one can confidently pronounce once they begin to embody that Tom Buchanan, millionaire on East Egg lifestyle. For some of us, the finer things are fairly simple: good company, cheap wine and poetry that makes me feel things I forgot I was capable of feeling.

Feature: The Curious Cases of Jyoti and Anene - Not a Favourite Song to Singh

With outcries against brutal rape and the ill treatment of the women across opposite ends the globe, it is interesting to note the parallels between the high profile cases of Jyoti Singh Pandey and Anene Booysen.

It has been exactly a week since the highly controversial "Is love colour-blind" article (below) was published in the University of Cape Town's official student newspaper. The Varisty Newspaper has since become the product of a number of rants on social networks, blogs and more recently, local news networks.

Marikana Memoirs

Image by LiveBlog Mail & Guardian edited by Naledi Sibisi
In August 2012, South Africa experienced what the French would refer to as Déjà vu, the illusion of remembering scenes and events when experienced for the first time: a feeling that one has seen or heard something before” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2013:1). The Marikana massacre resulted in extensive coverage in both the local and global media arena. The following presents an analysis of the way in which storytelling strategies uncovered the event.

"My President Is Black" They Said

Image by The Daily Maverick edited by Naledi Sibisi
When current US President Barack Obama was elected in 2009, celebrations were widespread as citizens were elated at the fact that their president is black. 4 years down the line, who would've guessed he'd be associated with a different sort of black - the devil?

Justin Case You Were Wondering

Boy did he test our patience. But boy, is he rewarding us for the wait. - Mesfin Fekadu (2013)

I know this album dropped over a week ago, but I wanted to give it a fair critique away from the Justin Timberlake just released his first album since 2006 hype.

The 20/20 Experience features the classical JT whom some of us have grown to love for putting together a consistent piece of work because let's face it, we are currently in an era where artists are focused on releasing catchy singles as though we wouldn't appreciate a good album from the first to last track - without having to visit the skip button. It makes sense that this is the case because the neo-soul sounding album was largely inspired by 1960s and 1970s music with extended song structures.

Yesterday was monumental as the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis was elected.

Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, the Argentinian native was ordained as a priest in the late 1960s and went on to become the Archbishop of Buenos Aires before the new millennium, you know, before the world was supposed to end?

Whispers of Wisdom

This past Saturday, The University of Cape Town's lower campus students may have heard about an open mic evening held in Graça Machel Hall. The evening event was well attended with a large part of the crowd having to stand outside the room and fill the doorway as students showcased their talents during this intimate setup.

The night started with refreshments and music and so the show began. Off to a slow start with a few poems that didn't particularly capture me, the night progressed accordingly. For the sake of more appropriate student phrasing, "it escalated quite quickly". Incredibly talented poets and musicians took the stage but it was indeed the winners of the contest, Whispers of Wisdom who are still on a few lips, most certainly mine.
