From The Editor

Dear Reader,

A play on the idea of an incorporation - a brainchild, a business, a brand as well as my operation of ink (figuratively of course), as I am most passionate about writing, this blog serves to provide my opinion and insights on current events in the media.

"Writers always say, 'I always knew I wanted to be a writer; when I was a three-month-old foetus a pen formed in my hand and I began to scratch my first story on the inside of my mother's womb.' I started later, in my early twenties."
- Harlan Coben

That being said, my name is Naledi Sibisi, who in her early twenties, has grown comfortable with the idea that the pen is indeed her portion. For an unspecified period of time, I wish to take you on a journey as I welcome you to The Ink-Operation of N.

"My President Is Black" They Said

Image by The Daily Maverick edited by Naledi Sibisi
When current US President Barack Obama was elected in 2009, celebrations were widespread as citizens were elated at the fact that their president is black. 4 years down the line, who would've guessed he'd be associated with a different sort of black - the devil?

According to The Daily Maverick, "The popular U.S. TV miniseries "The Bible" has plunged into controversy over what some viewers see as a physical resemblance between an actor playing Satan and President Barack Obama, but producers dismissed any likeness as coincidental."  - Alex Dobuzinskis (2013)

The series which airs on The History Channel takes viewers through the stories featured in the bible from the beginning of the old testament to the end of the new testament, making use of up-to-date graphics which allow for different ways to interpret arguably the most compelling stories in the text as well as the characters in it. The docudrama faces controversy as the finale of the season airs this upcoming Sunday.

Executive producer Mark Burnett, who is also the producer of well acclaimed reality television show Survivor blatantly denied all allegations regarding the character's resemblance to Obama. He stated that Mohamen Mehdi Ouazanni, the actor playing the role of the devil is well recognized in Morocco as he has had several similar and significant roles in other castings and any closeness in features to the US President is simply a coincidence.Allegations were sparked on Twitter - the social network that spreads news faster than you can say the word Obama when commentator Glenn Beck tweeted the following:

Shortly after that, the Twitter bunnies hopped on the bandwagon in agreement. Either way, producers continue to deny the claims, The Bible remains the most watched show between 8pm - 10pm and "The Devil" continues to sit comfortably in the white house.

Now, how is that for good publicity?

  1. Ironically, I think history has taught us that there is no such thing as a coincidence. Some, not so hidden, agenda is actually trying to be pushed here, time will tell.
